This etching is the first illustration from ‘The boy who left home to learn fear’ tale, which tells the story of a boy who leaves home to learn how to shudder. The design was taken from a drawing Hockney made of the library of the art collectors Sheridan and Lindy Dufferin’s house in Ireland. Although not originally intended to be part of the Grimm project, Hockney decided it was the perfect opening image for this tale of the younger son departing from the security of his home. The empty chair, used as a human metaphor, is of course a motif familiar from Van Gogh and appears many times in Hockney’s work. This is considered to be the masterpiece of the series.
