This etching depicts the terrace, garden and swimming pool of Hockney’s home on Montcalm Avenue, high up in the Hollywood Hills. The house was situated in south-east Santa Monica, an area of great natural beauty, set in the midst of bountiful canyons filled with flora, fauna and animals, and had a kidney shaped pool surrounded by hanging gardens. Hockney moved there in the Summer of 1979, adding his studio in 1983, the year he made this print. The brightly-hued residence has proved an enduring subject for the artist, appearing in prints, drawings, paintings and photography; early works inspired by his home include ‘Hollywood Hills House, 1981-82 (oil, charcoal and collage on canvas) and ‘My House, Montcalm Avenue, Los Angeles, Friday, February 26th 1982’ (composite polaroid).
